FIFA Gets Tough on Hungary

INTERNATIONAL: FIFA has ordered that Hungary must play their next World Cup qualifier behind closed doors. It has also imposed a $217,000 fine, following racist incidents during this month's match against England. Hungary’s next qualifier is against Albania on 9 October.

FIFA says numerous supporters were to blame for the racist incident in Budapest. Monkey noises were aimed at two of England’s black players. Projectiles, including a flare, were also thrown and stairways were blocked as security officials tried to take action. FIFA decided to penalize Hungary with its next two matches played behind closed doors, but has suspended that second match penalty for two years. The incident didn’t seem to hurt England though, who went onto win that qualifier 4-0.

However, it has further tainted Hungary and its supporters. They already have to play their next two UEFA games behind closed doors for racist fan behaviour during Euro 2020.
